Hey, was just thinking about suggesting this.  On a previous RP site I was on, they used a purely non-numerical system that worked quite well and made characters much more dynamic.
The stats were something like this:

General stats:
Strength: Simply how strong they are physically.
Durability: The skill at which your character can take damage.
General Speed: The rate at which they react, move, and generate attacks.
Weapon Skill: How well they are at crafting or using weapons effectively.

Will sheet:
Willpower/Determination: The power to fight on and take blows until you hit a physical limit.
Mental Deduction: Your ability to see through things and your general skill to solve problems.
Pain Endurance: Your ability to endure pain.
Focus: Your ability to focus on a single thing, ignore distractions, and maintain an inner calm.

This system allowed for much more versatility both character wise and combat wise.  Their was even a non-payment growth system where you would compile links to threads your character improved in some way, say what stats you wanted to increase and how much, and then it would be reviewed.  There was also a power tier system, which for RWBY could possible be applied to strength of semblances and your amount of aura.

The power tier system had tiers 0 to 6, each segmented into 5 smaller pieces.  An example being tier 6 at bottom, then tiers 5-5, 5-4, 5-3, 5-2, 5-1, 4-5 and so on, 0-1 being at the top.

Characters starting General Stats and Mental Sheets were judged on their Personality and History and such, while their starting Tier was judged off of the general quality of their character's application.

For example, my app Gilgamesh COULD have started as:

Strength: Adept or Advanced
Durability: Adept or Advanced
General Speed: Beginner probably
Weapon Skill: Beginner or Adept

Willpower/Determination: Advanced
Mental Deduction: Beginner or Adept
Pain Endurance: Beginner or Adept
Focus: Adept or Advanced

And I'd probably get a fairly low starting power tier such in the 4's or maybe even 5's, cus, honestly, my app isn't THAT detailed or long.

This system would, of course, be adapted to the RWBY universe in some way, but I still think of it as a damn good idea that should probably be considered.  Though this system does require good common sense from it's roleplayers, and a fair bit of administration, so it would be understandable as to why newer sites with very limited staff wouldn't use it, though I would still take it into consideration.

This method would:
Not utilize a fixed numerical value of Health or Aura, making the combat system one of only roleplay and common sense based on your statistics.
Make the combat system fluid and fast, and also more realistic, as we clearly see every member of teams RWBY, JNPR, and CFVY can all dispatch multiple grimm with relative ease by themselves, excluding Jaun, but it's mentioned he didn't go through proper training beforehand.  Both teams RWBY and JNPR are also only first years.
Probably make aura types obsolete, though would allow for more complex and versatile semblances, and would allow semblances to possibly evolve.
Require a revamp of the weapon/armor system into something more dynamic and/or roleplay based to take into account the lack of numerical values.

PS: Mental Deduction and Willpower/Determination could also count against mentally influencing abilities.
PS: The site from which this comes from is also over 4 years old and still ongoing with a pretty damn big active user count.

I'm not so sure about all of the other things that Gilg put in, but I would love to see some form of character progression or leveling system. Even in the anime(Show) there is a huge difference between people based on their experiences in the world. One of the obvious examples being team rwby against team CFVY, The senior team was able to take out the Grimm with ease.

Actually there is a character growth system through upgrading things, but it was somewhat forgotten. We will work on making it more known in detail in the next update!
